The Utah County SMUG welcomes Rob Daugherty!

The Utah County SMUG welcomed Rob Daugherty to their latest meeting at the Utah County Co-Op Studio location, and we had over 50 people in attendance. Rob is a wildlife photographer from Oregon, based in Northern Utah. Rob is not only a photographer, but the owner of The Vest Guy. He makes vests that are custom to what any photographer needs while on a shoot. We learned how many different places in Utah and closely surrounding states for wild life photographing opportunities that are unique.

As Rob went through an astounding portfolio with us, he talked about his equipment, some of which he had there to show us, such as his 400mm lens, Mark IV, and his tripod. He also talked about using Noise Ninja, CS5 and Lightroom 4 for some of his post process work. We also asked questions about how many of his captures are even possible. Being so close to a bear, or catching a herring at the right moment. Rob spoke of hours and hours sitting and waiting, and that sometimes you just get a lucky shot. Rob has photographed in the following areas, just to name a few:
  • Botswana, Africa
  • Arches National Park, Utah
  • Victoria Falls, South Africa
  • Yellowstone National Park
  • Nebraska
  • Wisconsin
  • Green Lake Tetons
  • Green River
  • Russian River, Alaska

Photographing wildlife requires a great deal of time, dedication, as well as a lot of patience. Rob spoke of waiting for over 11 hours at times. Many of these shoots take place in confined spaces or in a blind. Africa and Alaska, as well as many of the mountainous regions in the United States, present extreme temperature conditions that can affect the use of your equipment.
In Rob’s traveling he has seen some of the earth’s most marvelous things. His photo of Victoria Falls was breath-taking, and he told us how he has witnessed the circle of life when he saw a bear eating a dead Bison.

After Rob spoke, he did a raffle for those in attendance. He gave away a large lens bag, a couple of compact camera pouches, a camera kit, and a few other items. We would like to thank Rob for such an amazing presentation and look forward to seeing his work as he continues to create these “wow” images!
